The Program
Philosophy and Mission
The Little Red Schoolhouse offers a nursery school experience for children ages two years nine months to five. We believe these early years, when children are eager and ready to learn, are of vital importance. Our goal at the Little Red Schoolhouse is to provide first-hand experiences that enrich each child’s background, further stimulate his/her desire to learn and help the child accept him/herself as an individual within a group – while also stimulating parent participation in this first learning experience. We want the children to feel that school is a good, safe and secure place in their widening world.
Educational Approach
All Little Red teachers are state-certified and our program has achieved full accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Our program is designed to maintain and encourage a child’s natural curiosity and joy of discovery and to help them express themselves creatively. Each year our plans include seasonal activities in science, whole language, creative art experiences, storytelling, dramatic play, music, listening activities, block play, tactile and visual exercises and gross-motor development. The daily schedule includes indoor and outdoor periods of free play, during which children choose both independent and guided activities. A group music time brings all ages together at the end of the morning before the children enjoy the beautiful outdoor playground. Our approach is child-centered, and recognizes the importance of play in a child’s life.
Cooperative Structure
Parents serve on the Board of Directors, which sets school policies, monitors the budget and hires staff. Parents also take on many other varied jobs according to their talents, schedules and preferences. From making playdough and substituting in the classroom, to participating in field trips and organizing fundraising events, our parents help to build a strong school experience for their children. Many parents enjoy being directly involved with their children as they help with classroom activities and special events. Parents have the opportunity to become partners in shaping their child’s preschool experience; this dynamic often endures throughout their child’s formal education.
